BEAUTY REVIEW: Lacura They’re Brilliant Mascara Sold at Aldi

I’m the kind of person that latches on to certain beauty products. I think I’ve been using the L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Mascara for literally a decade now, if not longer.

But when I recently spotted the Lacura They’re Brilliant Mascara on the shelf of my local Aldi, I decided to give it a try. At $4.99 for a tube, it’s a price that’s hard to beat.

About Lacura They’re Brilliant Mascara

According to the packaging, the Lacura They’re Brilliant Mascara is designed to extend, lift, and volumize without clumps, smudges, or flakes.

It also has a unique brush design. (At least, it’s unique to me! I’ve never used anything quite like it.) It has normal bristles like most mascara wands, but then the top end of the applicator has additional spikes. The instructions on the back actually tell you to turn the applicator and stroke upward to help keep lashes separate.

I bought the non-waterproof Lacura They’re Brilliant Mascara, but it does come in a waterproof version as well.

My Experience Using the Lacura They’re Brilliant Mascara

So…I couldn’t figure out how to use the unique brush correctly. Whenever I tried to turn the applicator and do upward motions like the box recommended, I would end up creating clumps. Though, during normal application, this wasn’t an issue. Unfortunately, the little spikes at the end of the brush did have a tendency to collect a glob of mascara, so this had to be wiped off slightly before applying.

I also found the mascara dried very quickly! On one hand, this is a good quality, as it prevented me from smudging it. However, I usually do two coats of mascara and I found that because it dried so quickly, my lashes didn’t really take a second coat very well. It felt almost crunchy? So, when applying the Lacura They’re Brilliant Mascara, time is of the essence if you need to make any lash corrections or plan to do multiple layers.

Final Thoughts on the Lacura They’re Brilliant Mascara

Would I buy it again? Probably not… but I do think I’m a large part of the problem.

I think with the right application technique (and patience to figure it out), this mascara has potential. I like that it seems to be long-lasting even in the Florida heat and humidity and doesn’t smear. I just seem to struggle with using the wand in a way that applies the mascara evenly to all of my lashes before it dries. But my wallet does like the price…
