A Year Without Clothing Shopping: My No-Buy Year

A Year Without Clothing Shopping: My No-Buy Year

Given the state of the world lately (*gestures vaguely toward everything*), I’ve been giving thought to how I can make a personal difference without feeling completely overwhelmed.

It’s with this mindset that I recently watched Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy on Netflix. While I knew consumerism (especially surrounding the fashion industry) was a big problem, this documentary brought attention to some horrible truths. Perhaps the biggest being that there is no “away.” When you throw something away or when you give something away, there is no away. It’s still here. Writing it out makes it sound so obvious, but I think it’s something that many of us, myself included, can forget. (Also, the real truth about recycling was extremely disappointing.)

It’s why I’m circling back on the idea of a no-buy year. I first talked about it in late 2020, but I’m now more inspired than ever to commit and give it a real shot.

As part of my 2025 new year’s resolutions, I’m attempting a no-buy year for new clothing. I think the shopping ban will provide a good opportunity to examine my consumption habits and reveal how often I was previously buying non-essential items of clothing.

Spoiler alert: It’s probably more than I thought. I read an article from PIRG that stated most Americans are buying 50+ new pieces of clothing a year! How can this possibly fit in anyone’s actual closet?

The Rules of My No-Buy Year

If I need a specific piece of clothing, I want to challenge myself to find it at the thrift store, borrow from a family member, or consider clothing swaps. Or, better yet, take a good look at what I already own and discover different outfit combinations I haven’t considered before.

Exceptions for the no-buy year include undergarments and gift cards that I already have. Ideally, those gift cards would be put to use toward clothing pieces that I truly need, rather than just want.

Obviously, my goal time frame to start is one year. But if all goes well, who knows? This could be just the start of shaking up my spending habits and ending the urge to give in to retail therapy.

Have you attempted a no-buy year or other shopping challenge? Let me know about your experience in the comments below! I’d love the support and inspiration.
